With a lack of social support in most communities, many of us have not had the opportunity to share our story about how hurricane sandy impacted our lives. As a double hurricane survivor, and social worker, I am compiling real-life stories from survivors of sandy to make an eye- opening, and inspiring book. It will give you a chance to share your story to others, and, in the process, heal yourself. Research shows that writing about your experiences after a traumatic event can help you understand it and cope with it better. You may find relief and release through sharing your story, find hope, and realize that you are not alone.

If you would like to participate, please write a short narrative or poem about your experience, before, during or after the hurricane, which ever seems to be replaying in your mind the most, or that you would like to share about. It can be a full narrative from when you first heard about when the hurricane was coming, to now, or just a small snap shot of your experience during that time frame that has really stuck out to you. It is up to you. Discuss themes of hope, overcoming life’s challenges, realized dreams and inspiration (if applicable), and use lots of vivid images by using the five senses. A good story will help the reader feel more hopeful about their life or more thankful, help them better understand what it is like to be a hurricane surviver; and will cause them tears, laughter, goosebumps or any combination of them. Please write from the first person, and have a beginning, middle and an end, and close with a punch.

Other themes to think about: Have you inspired others from your story, or have you done anything extraordinary out of this experience? Do you think anything has changed for the better after the storm? Was there any one person or organization in your life that has really helped you through this hard time?

Don’t worry about being or not being a professional writer. What matters is that you speak from your heart. Upon submitting your story, you are giving permission for it to be edited for eloquence and clarity, and published.
